WHY?
On Nov. 16, 2007, board members related to the ACE faction stopped the WBAI election through a court order and attempted to disenfranchise voters and restrict who could vote. Now the judge's ruling means that everyone who has not had the opportunity to vote can still vote.

But it is in fact a major battle between competing ideologies about whether to keep WBAI's programming focused on the struggles of working class people, particularly those in communities of color.

WBAI Board Disassociates Itself from Vicious, Racist, Public Comments of LSB Member Steve Brown 

(March 16, 2006)

The WBAI Local Station Board voted 10-1 to disassociate itself from a long stream of abusive, unsubstantiated and in some cases racist attacks on WBAI staff and managers, circulated by board member Steve Brown to thousands of WBAI listeners via large email lists. Brown's most recent attacks on Program Director Bernard White, an African American who has increased the diversity of station programming, have been denounced by numerous WBAI staff members as filled with false and offensive characterizations. Many of Brown's running matters on the "List-Prog" slate stayed away from the board meeting at which the vote occurred.

Justice & Unity Board Member Calls for Public to Oppose Overturning of National Board Committee on Racism & Sexism

In the wake of remarks by "List-Prog" member of the Pacifica National Board from WBAI, Patty Heffley, claiming that Justice & Unity board member Lisa Davis, an African American, had only sought election to the board for the free food, hotels & airfare, the National Board voted to establish a committee to investigate allegations of racist and sexist conduct by board members. Now Heffley is leading an effort to rescind that motion. Her move to rescind will be voted on during an April 24 teleconference.

Mumia Abu-Jamal's latest petition was just dismissed by Philadelphia Judge Pamela Dembe. This means that evidence pointing towards his innocence and prosecutorial misconduct won't be included in the record -- unless people do something about it!.

Join us for protest and outreach on Thursday, June 16, on the west side of City Hall in Philadelphia, at 12 noon. That will be the last day Mumia can file for "reconsideration" of Dembe's ruling. Coverage of demonstrations at the Brazilian embassies and consulates in NY, Washington DC, and Paris as well as in San Paulo, demanding Brazil take away patent rights from 3 AIDS drug manufacturers. Recently Brazil told 3 pharmaceutical companies that if they didn't voluntarily license 4 AIDS drugs, that Brazil would issue a compulsory license to allow for their generic manufacture. Brazil treats over 150,000 of its citizens with AIDS with triple drug therapy, but many of these people now require 2nd line drugs to stop the disease from progressing. ACT UP and Health GAP demonstrate in Washington DC and New York to demand that Brazil issue a compulsory license as Brazilian NGO's demand and export the drugs to other poor countries.

This episode also looks at charges by activists from the US, Bolivia, Kenya and Thailand, that W.H.O.'s the "3 by 5 plan", which calls upon the world to treat 3 million people by 2005 will be a failure if the Group of 7 industrialized (G7) countries continues to fail to provide promsed resources to stem the epidemic. Stephen Lewis, Special Envoy on AIDS to Africa calls on the G7 to provide funds for the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB, and Malaria and provide debt forgiveness to poor countries with a huge HIV/AIDS problem.

"Censoring AIDS Drug Pricing Controversy" for 65 Meg. file

For years AIDS activists have struggled to expose the real cost of production for AIDS drugs. When activists produced concrete evidence that generic versions of AZT and other early AIDS drugs were being produced by Indian Drug companies for $80/years supply vs. the $2500-$3500 being charged in the US, they faced an initial media black out. Eric Sawyer of ACT UP/NY discusses how he convinced ABC's Ted Koppel to run a story about this issue on Nightline in March 2000, only to have the crucial segment vetoed by the head of ABC News to avoid angering the programs sponsors. Sawyer also discusses the need for media reform and the founding of the ACT UP in 1987.

With the NJ State Government placing a bounty on the capture of Assata Shakur, the Battle for Progressive Media lets her tell the world about life in free Cuba.

For years, U.S. government travel restrictions have impeded the free travel of people from the U.S. to Cuba and made it difficult to communicate with people living there. In 1997, while in Cuba to cover a Latin American AIDS conference, journalists Bob Lederer and John Riley filmed an interview with Assata Shakur, a Black revolutionary living in exile in Havana. In the interview she discusses racism, sexism and homophobia in the new society and the battle against these oppressions.This interview was first broadcast on WBAI Radio in 1997.

According to a communique by the Black Liberation Army, Assata was freed from a New Jersey prison (where she was serving a life term after being convicted of murdering a police officer in a racist frameup) on November 2, 1979 by a BLA unit that included white allies. Assata surfaced in Cuba in 1986 after being granted political asylum.

"Race and Nationality at Pacifica"

Short update on Paul DeRienzo's continuing disruptive behavior at board meetings. At a recent local board meeting DeRienzo again disrupted the meeting by walking around the front of the room, in front of the board meeting while filming board members at the distance of a few feet blocking the view of members of the public.

At the Pacifica National Board meeting in Los Angeles held on January 15-17, long-postponed issues of broadening and enforcing policies to fully include communities of color and immigrants in the network's broadcasting, staffing and governance, and to deal with manifestations of conscious or unconscious racism, were finally addressed. On three occasions, in 2002, 2003 and 2004, previous boards had mandated adoption of broad policies on these issues, but no implementation had occurred. For four hours on January 17, the board grappled with four motions to move these policies forward. Three of those were administrative, but important: hiring coordinators to make sure the work is accomplished; developing funding streams; and setting up an expert commission to recommend affirmative action policies. These were referred to committees. Two other motions were passed -- the first, to establish an international Spanish language daily news broadcast, the second, to mandate anti-racism/anti-oppression trainings for board and staff members at all five stations. A fierce struggle is under way for the future political direction of WBAI. This will intensify with the imminent departure of anti-imperialist General Manager Don Rojas. A broad coalition of anti-racist activists -- the Justice and Unity Campaign -- holds a majority on the Local Station Board (after a hard-fought election campaign last fall), but their efforts are under siege from the board minority, led by the "List-Prog" slate, which disrupts every meeting and attempts to stop work from getting done. List-Prog is hostile to current station management and unfriendly to the unions of workers at the station.

One List-Prog ally on the board, Paul DeRienzo (who was a strident on-air supporter of the 2000-1 coup at WBAI), has consistently hurled vicious epithets -- such as "Nazi scum!", "Sieg Heil!", "When are you going to open BAI's ovens?" and "F--- you!" (5 times) -- at the chair and other board members. DeRienzo has also focused venomous attacks against African American male board members Father Lawrence Lucas, Omowale Clay, and Michael Tarif Warren.

WBAI Board Member Paul DeRienzo Suspended For Abusive Attacks on Other Members

The WBAI Local Station Board voted 12-7 Wednesday to suspend member Paul DeRienzo for six months and demand that he apologize "for his racist, sexist, anti-semitic and personal attacks" before returning to the board. DeRienzo, elected by listeners to a three-year term in January 2004, had become increasingly disruptive and vitriolic in recent meetings since last December, when a diverse slate of anti-racist community activists won a board majority in the second round of elections. DeRienzo has frequently denounced the policies of that slate -- the WBAI Justice and Unity Campaign -- and has publicly called for the firing of the station's General Manager and Program Director, both prominent African American community advocates. Crisis at WBAI

On June 25, WBAI's visionary anti-imperialist station manager Don Rojas -- longtime respected Black journalist and an exiled leader of Grenada's New Jewel Movement -- announced his plans to resign at the end of the year. This came just weeks after the Pacifica National Board meeting in Houston, where as part of a longer statement responding to a biased report by the Secretary of the Local Station Board, Don publicly said the following:

"Relations between the WBAI LSB [Local Station Board] and the staff have reached a crisis point. Management and staff feel like they are under siege resulting in plummeting staff morale. Indeed, many talented and committed senior staff throughout this network have resigned in recent months and others, including myself, are seriously contemplating leaving Pacifica soon if the situation does not improve."

And now progressive Program Director Bernard White, who was fired in 2000 by the Pacifica Network's pro-corporatist hijackers, and who the people's movement helped restore (along with 28 others of us who were fired, banned or driven out), finds himself under siege as well. Since Bernard's return in 2002, he has added more than a dozen new progressive public affairs and cultural programs covering such topics as the environment, youth, women's rights, the Latino community, Haiti, criminal justice issues, New York City political/economic justice issues, multicultural health approaches -- to name a few.

What You Can Do

to Help Keep WBAI on Track

(July 2004)

We need your help to build the pressure on the WBAI Local Station Board to stop harming the station. We also need all hands on deck to mount a campaign to elect a much more progressive Board this fall (9 of the 18 listener seats are up for election; nominations open July 25).

•  Become a voting member of WBAI (deadline: Aug. 31). Requirements: either a minimum $25 donation or 3 hours of volunteer work in the past year. Hardship waivers will be offered on a case-by-case basis. (You can donate online by secure credit card transaction at www.wbai.org , or call 212-209-2800.)

•  Get at least 5 friends to become voting members of WBAI. Spread the word everywhere you go. Speak at your community group, union, or religious institution.

•  Join the outreach campaign to elect progressive candidates to the Board this fall. Help distribute leaflets, fact sheets, and candidate petitions. Arrange for speakers to appear at your community group, union, or religious institution.

•  Consider becoming a Board candidate yourself or recommend a colleague who would be good - it's a three-year term and a lot of work, but will make a huge difference.

•  Attend meetings of the Board and its Committees and make your voice heard . All meetings are public, accessible, and include time for public comment. For dates and times, go to www.wbai.org (Local Station Board section) or call (212) 209-2919.

•  Join our letter-writing campaigns to protest unjust decisions of the Local Station Board.

TIMETABLE

July 25 - Board nominations open (must be enrolled WBAI member;

need 15 member signatures to qualify)

August 31 - Deadline for enrolling as a member with voting rights in fall election

September 25 - Board nominations close

October 15 - Ballots mailed to homes of all enrolled members

November 15 - Ballots must be received back by station

December - New board members seated.
